The 9th Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge, Saturday 8th July 2017
First and foremost we need to say a huge thank you to the Rotary and Big Lottery Fund who made our participation in the Dragon Boat challenge possible. It was an amazing day (definitely helped by the sun shining all day which left some of our volunteers a little red in the face the next day!), it was thoroughly organised and well attended by both teams and the public. We could not have asked for a better day.
Our lovely team of rowers and volunteers managed to raise over £1,000 for Star and we are sure you can appreciate that for a charity of our size, this is a huge amount for us and so our gratitude to our supporters is enormous. Funds were raised through sponsorship and our stall, which had a well stocked tombola, cake sale, guess the sweets in the jar and what proved to be very popular, stocks – there ended up being some very soggy parents leaving our pitch!
Whilst placing 13th was a disappointment to some of our rowers, this was the first time for many of them, so we are extremely proud of them all. It definitely gave them ‘the bug’, with talk of how to improve for next year already taking place before the day was out and there is certainly nothing wrong with some friendly competition when money is being raised for charity.
One of our lovely volunteers, Jen Bostock, had this to say about the day: “What a fantastic family day out. Not only was it well organised, it encouraged a great sense of friendly competition, whilst we were able to help some amazing charities. No wonder the sun shone on the day.”
We hope to enter again next year, with our eyes very much on the first place prize (!), and to raise even more money for Star.
